The sources we rely on
US Department of DefenseOfficial releases, contract announcements, budget justification books and service branch publications.
Congress and watchdogsCongressional Research Service and Government Accountability Office reports, hearings and the NDAA.
Federal dataBureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Veterans Affairs, FBI and Department of Justice data.
Courts and agenciesCourt filings, rulings and official statements from state and local agencies.
We also interview experts, service members, veterans and law enforcement professionals, and we cite reputable news organizations when we build on their reporting.
Images
- Public domain: many photos come from the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) and official military and government sources. Use of these images does not imply endorsement by the Department of Defense or any agency.
- Licensed stock: some images are licensed from stock photography providers and credited accordingly.
- Original graphics: charts, tables and illustrations created by our newsroom from official data.
- Illustrative images: where an image is illustrative rather than a photo of the event described, we say so in the caption or credit.
