The United States struck Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz late Monday, hours before Americans went to the polls, in what officials described as a limited, defensive action rather than the start of a new war.
Three U.S. officials confirmed the strikes to CNN. The Wall Street Journal first reported them. One official said the attack came in response to Iran firing at a U.S. aircraft. “This was a defensive measure for Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US assets,” another official told CNN.
U.S. Central Command, which runs American forces in the Middle East, did not respond to requests for comment from several news organizations. The Pentagon referred questions to CENTCOM, and the White House has repeatedly declined to discuss military plans that may or may not exist.
What US officials are saying
The officials’ message was consistent: this was not the resumption of major combat. One official told The Times of Israel, speaking on condition of anonymity, that the strikes appeared limited.
The more striking disclosure was that Monday’s attack was not the first of its kind. An official told ABC News that it was the latest in a series of limited strikes U.S. forces have carried out in recent weeks. Those earlier strikes were not publicized, the official said, so they would not be read as a signal that full-scale operations had restarted.
The Journal reported the strikes were meant to restrict Iran’s ability to attack commercial ships in the strait, according to Al Jazeera. Iran has stepped up attacks on tankers there in recent weeks.
What Iran is saying
Iranian state media reported a series of explosions on Qeshm. State outlets described five blasts in rapid succession, Gulf News reported, and the semi-official Fars news agency said explosions were also heard in the port city of Bandar Lengeh, coming from the sea.
Tehran’s official response was restrained. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran reserved the right to defend itself, but described the strikes as part of an ongoing war, CNN reported. Israel said it was not involved.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps made claims of its own. It said it shot down two U.S. reconnaissance drones over Qeshm late Monday, though CNN noted it was unclear whether that was linked to the U.S. strikes. On Tuesday, the IRGC also said three tankers exploded after hitting naval mines while crossing the strait without its permission, and that it downed two more U.S. drones near Bandar Khamir, according to Al Jazeera’s live coverage. None of those claims has been independently confirmed.
Why Qeshm matters
Qeshm is the largest island in the Strait of Hormuz and sits just off the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. It is one of Iran’s most important military outposts, with large underground missile bases, naval facilities and major seawater desalination plants, according to SBS News.
That geography gives Iran launch points close to the shipping lanes that carry tankers in and out of the Persian Gulf. It also makes the island a recurring target. U.S. forces have struck it before during the war, CNN reported.

Does this break Trump’s pledge?
President Donald Trump wrote on Oct. 8 that the United States would not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections. The last confirmed U.S. strikes on Iranian territory had been on Sept. 1.
The administration’s answer, through the officials who spoke to reporters, is that responding to attacks on American aircraft or commercial shipping is different from restarting the war. The term “defensive strikes” has been used throughout the conflict to describe U.S. retaliation for Iranian attacks on shipping lanes, ABC News noted.
Critics are likely to see it differently, especially after the disclosure that similar strikes were kept quiet. U.S. officials have also told allies to prepare for a possible larger campaign after the vote. We laid out what that could look like and how Tehran says it would respond.
Talks continue, for now
Diplomacy has not collapsed. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, said efforts to bridge the gap were continuing and that both countries were studying proposals, Al Jazeera reported. Vice President JD Vance has said Washington has made progress in indirect talks, while Tehran insists the United States must lift its naval blockade and meet its demands first.
Inside Iran, the signals are mixed. A senior Iranian official said a deal remained out of reach, The Times of Israel reported, and a giant billboard went up in Tehran’s Enghelab Square threatening to kill Trump. Iran’s president, parliament speaker and foreign minister have reportedly urged security officials to move ahead with the latest Qatari proposal.
What to watch
- Whether CENTCOM publicly confirms the strikes or discloses the earlier ones.
- Whether Iran retaliates against U.S. forces or Gulf states, as its leaders have threatened.
- Whether Trump approves a larger campaign once the polls close.
- Whether Iran answers Vance’s letter or accepts a Qatari channel for direct talks.
